Wolk Discussion

Group 1: Into/ Wondering about the world
·         They can’t remember what they learned
·         Only if they were interested
·         Not everyone is going to be Einstein but we can be just as curious and creative
·         Not learning because of the same pedagogy
·         “sit and be quite and listen to the teacher”
·         No curiosity, no voting, no passion, no knowledge of the real world
·         We do like to watch TV, work, surf the net, and shop
·         Schools have not succeeded
Group 2: Transmission Teaching and the Illusion of Learning
·         Interested in stuff they like
·         Remember bits and pieces
·         Get involved with each student
·         Transmission teaching: students sitting at the desk/ being quiet / quizzes / tests
·         Pedagogy hasn’t changed at all
·         Make learning experience purposeful
Group 3: What is Inquiry Based Teaching?
·         Opposite of transmission teaching
·         Active environment
·         Questions are answered
·         Understand what’s being taught
·         Come back home with answers
·         Real topics , real ideas
·         Engage students with experience
·         Planning a purposeful lesson à engaging students
Group 4: What Inquiry is not?
·         It’s not hands on
·         It’s not the same
·         It doesn’t answer the inquiry question, or has nothing to do with questions
·         Working together and thinking
Group 5: The Commonalities
·         How to improve your skills
·         Asking questions
·         Instead of textbooks, interact, collaborate

·         Be creative, think outside the box
